On Tuesday February 4th 2014 the Striving Vines played a gig at Kulturclub Schon Schön. They promoted their second album ‘Obstacles’ and toured Germany and Switzerland.
So when I found out that the latest band who made my Spotify playlist – and may I add that I can’t stop listening to their second album – it was pretty obvious that I would be attending their gig in Mainz.
It seemed that I wasn’t the only one who knew about the gig. The venue was absolutely packed for a Tuesday night in Mainz. People were singing along and danced to the catchy lyrics and melodic rhythms. The Striving Vines captivated the audience with their intense stage presence. I personally feel like that 60% of the bands sound better on record as they do live. BUT the Striving Vines completely refuted that clichee. Their sound is raw , pure and honest. The musical arrangements blow your mind off and they hold an ace up their sleeve, that trumps a lot of other indie bands on the musical horizon right now – their singer Jonas. His voice is crystal clear and oh boy, he can hit some serious high notes that made me envy him – just a little bit. In a nutshell, his voice is immaculate. They’re great musicians who know how to turn their emotions and experiences into trendy music that captivates people. I kept asking myself ‘What makes the Striving Vines so special? Why do you keep falling in love with them tune after tune?’ and then it hit me. Besides the obvious – wicked tunes, musical arrangements etc. – they ‘click’ on and off stage. The way they interact with each other on stage gives you the feeling that a) they really love what they’re doing and b) harmonise well together.
After the gig my friend Tina and I sat down with Jonas, had a couple of drinks and chatted to the lead singer.
Jonas – lead singer and keyboard player – told me that the band met back in 2009 in Aarhus at a music café. Michael, Jakob and Jens studied music together and performed at the same café as Jonas. After the gig they started chatting about music and that pretty much was the beginning of the Striving Vines. Shortly after their first encounter they got together, jammed and got a few tunes together and the rest is history.
The lads are lovely, although we mainly got to spend time with Jonas.
For all of you out there who have never heard of them: Do yourself a favour and look them up, you are definitely missing out and for the rest of you, are you already as excited as I am for their 3rd album???
